Mitsubishi Power begins operations for third M701JAC unit at Thai power plant

Apr 24, 2024 (MarketLine via COMTEX) --

Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has initiated commercial operations for the third M701JAC gas turbine at a natural gas-fired power plant in Rayong Province, Thailand.

The power plant, a joint venture between Gulf Energy Development PCL and Mitsui & Co, began operations on 31 March 2024.

Located approximately 130km south-east of Bangkok, the facility is managed by Gulf PD Company.

The project includes two GTCC power plants, each with four gas turbine units, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators and generators.

This marks the seventh out of eight M701JAC units to be delivered for two GTCC power plants in the region.

The completion of this phase signifies a significant step towards the full operation of both 2.65GW GTCC power plants, with a total output of 5.3GW, by fall 2024.

The plants are expected to meet the electricity demands of the eastern region’s industrial and economic sectors.

The four units at the Gulf Sriracha Power Plant in Chonburi Province, along with the two in Rayong, have collectively surpassed 75,000 actual operating hours, showcasing the JAC gas turbines’ reliability.

Mitsubishi Power (Thailand) president and managing director Akira Takahashi said: “Having been part of Thailand’s energy story for more than five decades, we are honoured that our robust GTCC solutions have helped to enhance the reliability and efficiency of Thailand’s energy infrastructure, and supported the country’s progress towards a more sustainable energy future.

“In cooperation with Gulf and valued partners, we aim to complete this project, and will continue to do our best to support long-term maintenance and services.”

Additionally, Mitsubishi Power has commenced operations of a M701JAC gas turbine at the 1.4GW Hin Kong Power Company plant in the country, with the second unit’s completion expected in January 2025.

In February this year, Mitsubishi Power secured an order to supply a GTCC system for the Navoi 3 project in Uzbekistan, which will provide 600MW of electricity and 200 gigacalories of heat.
